Teacher Example:
I feel this image is successful because of the way the formal elements of line, shape and pattern move dynamically across the image. The use of a shallow depth of field brings clarity to the abstracted leaf form and I used the rule of thirds to enhance the overall composition effect. Central to this image are the water droplets which are enhanced by the lighting conditions of the shoot. Using Pixlr, I post-edited the image's levels, curves, exposure balance and tints. This has added greater complexity to the images tonal range. The use of the aperture setting of f/1.8 brings a clear focal point to this abstract image and I am very pleased with the final result. |

“My botanical documents should contribute to restoring the link with nature. They should reawaken a sense of nature, point to its teeming richness of form, and prompt the viewer to observe for himself the surrounding plant world.” |

Using PIXLR, a free digital editing software, I was able to explore the use of layers and overlays. Overlay's are basically images that are added as an additional layer to photographs in order to add textures and elements that were not there in the original shoot. I uploaded my initial image onto PIXLR then inserted a new overlay using the 'add image as layer tab.' Once this was done, I used the 'Screen Overlay' and Layer Transparency' options to layer a 'scratches & dust' effect onto to my edited Karl Blossfeldt Photography. I added a subtle vignette to further the vintage feel to the image. |
